Fifteen-year-old Will wants desperately to go to Battleschool and become a warrior, but he’s too small. Instead, he’s apprenticed to Halt, the mysterious Ranger.

When Will asks what Rangers do, he’s told that apprentice Rangers do the housework, but soon Will’s real training begins, with a bow and arrow, knives, a camouflage cloak.

Meanwhile, Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is plotting to overthrow the kingdom. He’s enlisted the Wargal beasts and the even-more-frightening Kalkara whose eyes freeze their prey and whose screams freeze the blood.

Will has a bigger part to play than he ever would have imagined!

The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, Book 1) by John Flanagan (Puffin, 2006), 272 pages.

Also Suggested:

If you like the first book in the series, you'll like the second one too. The book gets more exciting as it goes along as Will, his friend Horace, and a girl named Evanlyn discover the attack plans of the evil Morgarath—and must stop him and his army on their own! It's similar to the first in the ratings, though G*d is used a few more times than in the first book.

The Burning Bridge (Ranger's Apprentice, Book 2) by John Flanagan (Puffin, 2007), 288 pages.

  Book Rating
Offensive Language Mild—G*d; 6 d*mns/d*mned; 2 hooligans, 2 idiots, sneaker, creeping, sonny, 2 punys; baby—many times, crybaby, No-Name. Hero and another boy verbally spar with each other through much of the book: one says, "You need muscles to get into Battleschool"; the other replies, "Especially between the ears," etc. Comment about having "too much cotton wool between [the] ears." Mention that former apprentice wants to catch his master "with his breeches down," i.e., unprepared.
Sex, Nudity, Reproduction Very Mild—implication of animals mating; one insult about a mother running off with another man; one kiss, not graphic.
Drugs and Alcohol Very Mild—adults drink, accepted; teens drink non-alcoholic beer.
Violence Moderate—mention of old battle; serious physical bullying, graphic; one-on-one fighting, graphic; hunting a wild animal, somewhat graphic; fighting monsters, graphic.
Dishonesty/Criminal Behavior Moderate—some lying, including lying to oneself; stealing, accepted.
Witchcraft, Fantasy, the Supernatural Mild—fantasy animals; some mention of magic, but not clear that any is practiced.
Other Concerns Feelings of revenge satisfied.
Positives Hero tells the truth; old enemies are reconciled; hero learns to value his own strengths. Join Will as he learns to be the ranger's apprentice.
